Noteworthy Events

A radio interview featuring Bev Shaffer on the “Faith Middleton Show” will highlight the author’s latest book, Cakes to Die For! ($26.95). The program broadcasts from WNPR, the public radio station out of New Haven, CT. Shaffer’s interview will air on Wednesday, September 15.

The Children’s Book Council has selected Dianne de Las Casas, author of The Gigantic Sweet Potato ($16.99), to write the “Meet the Author/Illustrator” column for the September/October issue of their Knowledge Quest newsletter. The topic of the article is intellectual freedom online.

De Las Casas has her own Web site (www.storyconnection.net); a blog (http://storyconnection.net/blog/); a personal Facebook page and fan page; a Twitter account (@storyconnection), which she updates frequently; and a monthly e-newsletter with thousands of subscribers. She has online resources for all of her books, including
The Cajun Cornbread Boy ($15.95), Madame Poulet and Monsieur Roach ($15.95), and Mama’s Bayou ($16.99); activity guides; printable puppets; and coloring sheets. Her Web site also contains book trailers and YouTube videos of her performances. De Las Casas has two daughters—one in college and one who just turned ten—so she is aware of the concerns parents and teachers have about children being online.

The following titles are available for purchase as Kindle editions from Amazon: Talk Your Way to the Top: Communication Secrets to Change Your Life ($23.00), by Kevin Hogan; Ghost Hunter’s Guide to California’s Gold Rush Country ($14.95), by Jeff Dwyer; Bo and the Christmas Bandit ($8.95), by Lynn Sheffield Simmons; Spy Recruit ($8.95), by Erin Osborne; The Pelican Guide to Plantation Homes of Louisiana ($12.95), by Anne Butler; and Henriette Delille: Rebellious Saint ($19.95), by Elsie B. Martinez and Colette H. Stelly. The e-books can be wirelessly downloaded to the Kindle once purchased from Amazon.com. New titles are being added every day.

A haunting new experience at the Old State Capitol in Baton Rouge brings Louisiana’s Civil War to life. The Ghost of the Castle, an immersive theater experience, allows visitors to relive the castle’s troubled past through the eyes of Sarah Morgan. At the age of twenty, Morgan was on the run from Northern forces, and she coped by pouring every detail of her experience into her diaries. Now her “ghost” recalls the determination it took for locals to save the castle from repeated destruction.

The detailed history of the building can be found in Carol K. Hasse’s Louisiana’s Old State Capitol ($14.95 pb), and a middle reader, Yankees on the Doorstep: The Story of Sarah Morgan ($10.95 pb), by Debra West Smith, tells of the remarkable life of Morgan.

On A Solemn Note

Dave Dixon, the man who brought the Saints and the Superdome to New Orleans died on August 8, at the age of eighty-seven. His autobiography, The Saints, the Superdome, and the Scandal ($24.95), tells of how he persuaded city officials to pursue a franchise with the National Football League rather than with Major League Baseball. Named one of the “Ten Most Important New Orleanians of the 20th Century,” by New Orleans Magazine, Dixon lived to see the team and the stadium recover from 2005’s Hurricane Katrina, and he witnessed the Saints win the Super Bowl this past season.
